Ok, hold onto your judgment caps, but I’m going to admit something that moms aren’t supposed to—we have junk food in the house.(And the blogosphere gives a collective gasp)
As a new mother I didn’t whip up homemade batches of sweet potato baby food or buy organic quinoa teething biscuits.
(The blogosphere's head explodes)
I know for damn sure my mother didn’t, and somehow I survived.
I consider chewy granola bars health food and fruit leathers a perfectly reasonable source of fruit-based nutrients.
(The blogosphere calls Social Services)
The other day I admitted on Twitter that I leave a bowl of chocolate out and have a cabinet with Cheetos and Doritos. I’m proud to say even with ready access he always asks permission before he eats any of them.
Sometimes it’s granted and sometimes it’s denied, but he never sneaks. Ever.
As a kid my dad would buy stacks of the half-pound Crunch Bars and we’d all hang out in my parent’s room and eat them while we watched TV. We had cookies in the pantry and cans of squeeze cheese.
Again, somehow I survived.
It’s not an excuse it’s just a fact.
Sometimes we look back in horror at some of the things our parents did when it came to raising us. We were put on our stomachs in the crib, didn’t have car seats, and yet, if you’re reading this, somehow we survived.
Maybe that takes the pressure off. Maybe there’s a mom or two out there who has felt “less than,” because they didn’t play Mozart when their kids were in utero, enroll their kids in Francais Por Bébés, or compost.
We’re quick to judge each other and quicker to judge ourselves. But this is all I’m saying—whatever you’re doing or not doing is not going to make your child better or worse than everyone else’s.
And doesn’t make you a better or worse mother than everyone else.
Do what you’re comfortable with. Own it.
Allowing my son to eat some junk food is just one of many parenting decisions I make everyday.
The fact that my kid isn’t a sneak, with food or anything else, means I’m doing something right.

6 things that matter:
Hey! I'm old enough that I remember that we had jarts to play with---and we used each other as targets. We all survived.
And I love, love, love squirt cheese!!!
I vividly remember her doing squeeze cheese flourets on Ritz Crackers and thinking that was fancy-schmancy! Jarts! heh.
::fistbump:: Here too. There is junk food here. Also lots of organic healthy crap. My kids love both. I'm really okay with it.
i am glad that my child eats better (healthier) than i do because i have food issues i did not want to pass onto her.
i am an extremely picky eater, and luckily, her exposure to a wide variety of foods helped kick her into a waaaaay better eater than i am.
i firmly believe that she has already eaten more veggies in her 3 years than i have in my 37!
we do occasionally have sweets and chips and such. but The Mr. likes to remind her that if we have them everyday, they are no longer "treats"
i am glad to have exposed her to many different foods that she enjoys. but she's still a kid. and her faves are still pizza & mac n chz.
and that is fine by me!
Hello, my name is Michelle and my child eats pizza and chicken nuggets and french fries and sun chips.
I do believe that as we speak my kids are tucking in to tiny teddies...for breakfast!
